EARLY RENAISSANCE TUSCANY
David Caldo describes the research for his book Florentine Masque, a thriller set in medieval Tuscany. Research as an author is different from research as an historian – we are interested in different things. What does it feel like to fly a hawk? What was it like to be a woman in love? Can you imagine riding from 14th century Florence to Siena?

FANS FROM THE COURTS OF EUROPE
From the time that the Florentine born Catherine de’ Medici became Queen of France in 1547 until the middle of the 20th century fans were an essential fashion accessory for ladies of all the royal courts of Europe. This talk will focus on the history and development of fans which have celebrated royalty since that date and will also discuss some splendid fans made in the 19th and early 20th centuries for known royal personages.

TREASURES OF HYDE ABBEY
With guest speaker Graham Scobie, Heritage Information Officer for the Winchester Museums Service.

Hyde Abbey, Winchester, was founded in 1110 and is perhaps best known as the final burial place of Alfred the Great. This talk looks at its history, and gathers together the surviving treasures - manuscripts, sculpture and other artefacts - that graced this once great House.

Essential Information.

Lunches with Guest Speaker will be held in the Woodhouse Suite in the Visitors’ Centre unless advised to the contrary and will start at 12.30pm, finishing between 2.30 and 3.00pm.

Suppers with Music will have doors opening at 7.00 for a 7.30pm start and will finish between 10.00 and 10.30pm.

Special Dietary Requirements can be catered for - please advise at time of booking.

All lunches and dinners are sold subject to availability. We reserve the right to cancel any event - should this occur we will advise anyone holding a reservation one to two weeks before the due date.
