MULTIMEDIA EXHIBITION: RESONANCE
Antony Gormley’s Sound II and the crypt provided inspiration for a performance based arts project in 2007, choreographed by Katherine Gilkes. In this exhibition photographer Elli Goodlet explores themes of baptism and rebirth through photography and moving image taken during the performance. Cathedral entry fees apply


3rd Jul to 12th Jul  

CONTEMPORARY ART, CRAFT & DESIGN FAIR

Cathedral Inner Close, 10am - 6pm
This wonderful selling exhibition presents a unique opportunity to see Guilds of Craftsmen from Hampshire & Berkshire, Sussex, Surrey and Oxfordshire alongside a large number of outstanding independent craftspeople. Awe, admiration and inspiration are just some of the things you can expect to experience (and take home!). Admission (allows unlimited entry): £3 per person, children under 16 free with accompanying adults. A special Private View, with wine and refreshments, will be held on Friday 3 July from 6pm – 8pm, tickets £10 available from 18 May from the Cathedral Box Office.

CONCERT: TOWARDS SILENCE
A major new work by Sir John Tavener

Programme:
Vivaldi: The Four Seasons
Sir John Tavener: Towards Silence (Ist UK performance) for four string quartets and large Tibetan bowl.
Featuring The Medici Quartet, Court Lane Quartet, Finzi Quartet and Harpham Quartet. This remarkable new work for four string quartets by John Tavener receives its first UK performance in Winchester Cathedral as part of the 2009 Art and Mind Festival - 'Dreams, art and the brain'. The Winchester performance is supported by Winchester City Council, Hampshire County Council and the University of Winchester. There will be a pre-concert talk at 7 pm.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
By William Shakespeare
One young couple are hopelessly in love, another are in denial, the Duke can't wait to get his hands on his bride-to-be - and the fairy King and Queen hate each other's guts. Deep in the forest Puck makes a careless mistake, and the consequences escalate into absolute uproar. Performed with a magical twist, international award-winning Illyria’s production of this perennial Shakespeare favourite is passionate, poetic and very very funny.

Tickets purchased in advance: £12.50 adults, £10 concessions (over 60s and groups of 10 or more), £8 children and full-time students, £33 family ticket (2+2). On sale from 1 April.

Jane Austen created seven very different romantic heroines in her six famous novels.  Elizabeth Proudman, official tourist guide and expert on Jane Austen, looks at what inspiration for their experiences might have come from the author's own life?

Winchester Festival: Opening Concert
Waynflete Singers and Florilegium, conducted by Andrew Lumsden present two Haydn masterpieces with English connections, including his most glorious setting of the Mass. Perfect contrast is provided by Mozart’s Vespers, with its lovely Laudate Dominum.
Tickets: £10 - £32

Winchester Festival: London Conchord Ensemble

A feast of French music with special guest Katherine Broderick. Pierné’s Sonata da Camera, with its neo-baroque style, lush harmonies and rip-roaring Finale, is contrasted with chamber songs by Ravel and Saint-Saëns. The latter’s most famous pupil, Fauré, is showcased in the glorious and enduringly popular C minor Piano Quartet. Tickets: £15 (students £10)

Winchester Festival: A Little Late Night Music

Southern Voices return to the seam of Russian choral masterpieces with Passion Week by Alexander Gretchaninov. This is a majestic sequence of thirteen settings of liturgical texts drawn from the Russian Orthodox liturgies of Holy week, though intended by the composer for non-liturgical performance. Tickets: £12.50

EXHIBITION: A WINCHESTER TRIPTYCH BY D F STUBBS
This large, figurative still-life painting has been inspired by a quote from the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. A lecture on the philosophy of Wittgenstein will compliment this exhibition, date to be announced. Admission: Cathedral entry fees apply

FAMILY SUMMER HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES
Saturday 1 – Monday 31 August

In addition to the free children’s trail available throughout the year, there’s an array of exciting events and activities taking place throughout the month of August. 
Exhibition: Bugs Galore! An exhibition exploring the underground world of bugs in the Cathedral – Wooly Bear, Silverfish and Book Worms might sound harmless enough but they’re causing havoc in the library. Find out more about them and their habitat and what makes them such a nuisance. There’s even a chance for you to get creative by taking part in our ‘create a bug’ competition.
Pre-booked Workshops: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am – 12pm, led by the Cathedral’s Director of Education, children will discover aspects of Cathedral life through these creative workshops. Call Cheryl on 01962 857 224 to book (children £2, accompanying adults free).
Drop-in Workshops: Every Wednesday from 10am – 12pm, get crafty at the Cathedral by creating sculptures, rockets, mobiles from a selection of interesting materials. Cathedral entry fees apply.

Featuring Farnham Youth Choir conducted by David Victor-Smith, Latvian Radio Chamber Singers conducted by Kaspars Putninš, and Sarabande (Canada) conducted by Bruce Pullan. Tickets: details to be announced.

THE MOWGLI STORIES
Adapted from The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling
A young man emerges from the jungle and leads a Forest Officer straight to where the man-eating tiger has hidden. But how? He says he grew up in the jungle, speaks all the animals’ languages and learned their laws. But is this true? Mowgli’s REAL adventures are more extraordinary and a lot more exciting than any cartoon film! In this brand new production, international award-winning Illyria uses an ensemble chorus, masks, puppetry and song to evoke the amazing world of Kipling’s jungle. Suitable for all ages 5+.

THEMED LUNCH: TREASURES OF HYDE ABBEY
Hyde Abbey, Winchester, was founded in 1110 and is perhaps best known as the final burial place of Alfred the Great. Graham Scobie, Heritage Information Officer for the Winchester Museums Service, looks at its history and gathers together the surviving treasures.

CONCERT: WINCHESTER ROTARY 'HELP FOR HEROES'
Winchester Rotary Club is proud to present a concert in aid of ‘Help for Heroes’ featuring the internationally renowned Treorchy Male Choir together with the Adjutant General’s Corps Band, one of Britain’s leading Military Bands.

Set up in October 2007, Help for Heroes, in the words of the Prime Minister, has become a “National Institution” having already raised over £18 million to help support our wounded Servicemen and women injured in recent conflicts.

The programme for the evening will contain a wide variety of music including combined items by Choir and Band and the ever popular and entertaining soloist Mezzo Soprano Kate Woolveridge.

The Concert will be attended by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mrs Mary Fagan JP, and introduced by journalist Kate Adie OBE.

HAMPSHIRE HARVEST WEEKEND
From 10am - 5pm
A free family event celebrating Hampshire’s food and farming, including children’s activities, farming displays, livestock, and a Hampshire Farmers Market. Entertainment from local musical ensembles & Winchester Morris Men. There will be an opportunity to join the Dean for a Hampshire Sunday lunch (tickets tbc), followed by a Hampshire Harvest Festival Service at 3.30pm. All welcome!

CONCERT: STACEY KENT
A recent addition to the Blue Note/EMI roster of recording artists, Stacey Kent now boasts seven best-selling albums, including her latest album Breakfast on the Morning Tram which has recently gone 'Gold' in both France and Germany, and has been nominated for 'best vocal jazz album' at the 2009 Grammy Awards. The album is a mixture of classic standards and new songs written by husband and saxophonist, Jim Tomlinson, in collaboration with award winning novelist, and now lyricist, Kazuo Ishiguro. in aid of Emmaus, Winchester.

CHRISTMAS MARKET & ICE RINK
They're back! For the fourth year running the Cathedral's historic Inner Close will stage one of the country's finest Christmas markets and popular ice rink.  The Christmas Market will run from 27 November - 20 December and the Ice Rink from 27 November - 3 January. Details of all our Christmas events, including services, carol concerts, twilight tower tours, lantern procession and storytelling will be featured in due course.
