THE GREAT NAVE
Visit the Cathedral and see the great nave free from chairs. Winchester Cathedral is the longest medieval cathedral in Europe. By removing the chairs the space seems almost bigger and taller, and certainly very striking.
CATHEDRAL OPEN EVENING
A very special opportunity to experience the Cathedral in a totally new light. Learn about the work that goes on behind the scenes. The evening will include demonstrations, displays and presentations led by a number of our volunteer sections and staff, a short concert, guided tours and children's activiites. This is also a wonderful evening to see the Cathedral as it would have looked in centuries gone by and parts of the building lit by candlelight.
Not to be missed. Free entry for all.

CONCERT: THE WAYNFLETE SINGERS
Rachmaninov: Vespers (All-Night Vigil) Op.37
Arvo Pärt: The Beatitudes
(plus organ music by Dupré)
conductor: Andrew Lumsden
Rachmaninov's 'All Night Vigil' (Vespers) is one of the composer's great masterpieces, a fervent response to the liturgy of the Russian Orthodox Church and one of the great glories of sacred music. A capella choral music which is both opulent and dazzling whilst conveying religious intensity and devotion. This is the Waynflete's first performance of this sublime work, which has been hailed as one of the most moving and profound pieces of sacred music of the 20th century.
Arvo Part: The 'Beatitudes', for choir and organ, dates from 1990 and the chant-like phrases of St Matthew's text are treated to the ringing, bell-like textures that Part refers to as 'tintinnabuli', rising to a climax which the solo organ is left to resolve in an intense postlude. Tranquility, devotion and a profound sense of spirituality are perfectly displayed in this short choral work.

A SPECIAL JANE AUSTEN EVENT
THEMED LUNCH: REGENCY GARDENS AND THE RESTORATION OF EDWARD AUSTEN KNIGHT'S KITCHEN GARDEN AT CHAWTON HOUSE
Landscape Architect Cassie Knight - the six-times great niece of Jane Austen - is giving a talk on the gardens she helped restore at her former family home Chawton House. The talk will focus on the work done by Edward Austen Knight, the brother of Jane Austen, who inherited Chawton House in the late 18th Century.
When Cassie's father, Richard Knight, inherited Chawton House in 1987 the place had fallen into a sad state because of the toll taken by death duties on the family's fortunes. It was rescued by American entrepreneur Sandy Lerner - a huge fan of Jane Austen - who bought a 125-year lease on the estate and set about restoring the house and grounds to their former glory. Cassie Knight was aked to turn back time and recreate a landscape that would have been familiar to Jane Austen and her family. Cassie plans to tell this story, using material from Jane Austen's novel Mansfield Park, and the Chawton House Estate records.
