When Cassie's father, Richard Knight, inherited Chawton House in 1987 the place had fallen into a sad state because of the toll taken by death duties on the family's fortunes. It was rescued by American entrepreneur Sandy Lerner - a huge fan of Jane Austen - who bought a 125-year lease on the estate and set about restoring the house and grounds to their former glory. Cassie Knight was aked to turn back time and recreate a landscape that would have been familiar to Jane Austen and her family. Cassie plans to tell this story, using material from Jane Austen's novel Mansfield Park, and the Chawton House Estate records.

Modern ‘heroes’ include Dean Michael Stancliffe, and the composer John Taverner.
