Thomas Tallis (1505-85) is one of the giants of English church music and this CD includes some of his most intimate works as well as the sublime Lamentations of Jeremiah. The highlight of this recording is the famous 40-part motet Spem in alium, which scholars believe was written for the fortieth birthday of Mary Tudor or Elizabeth I.

A very different, but no less worthy, recording by David Hill and Crispian Steele-Perkins. The programme includes Clarke's famous Trumpet Voluntary, Mozart's Seranade in B flat and Purcell's Trumpet Tune and Air.

The Byrd Mass for five voices is one of the most sublime settings of the Mass. On this recording it is interspersed with the Propers for the Feast of Corpus Christi, including both plainsong and communion motets by William Byrd.
