The twelfth-century Winchester Bible, housed in the Cathedral Library, is the largest and perhaps finest of all surviving medieval English Bibles. This authoritative and lavishly illustrated guide tells the fascinating story of how the Winchester Bible was created, and includes a detailed guide to its illuminations and the stories they illustrate.
Unusually, the entire text was copied in Latin by a single scribe at the Priory of St Swithun - a tremendous accomplishment for just one writer. It is thought that six artists worked on its exquisitely illuminated capital letters. Author Claire Donovan is a lecturer in art history, specialising in illuminated manuscripts.
