Over 200 children from Hampshire Primary Schools will join together on Wednesday 27 June to fill Winchester Cathedral with the sound of music.
For a number of years now, Winchester Cathedral has collaborated with The Pilgrims’ School and the Hampshire Music Service to deliver a Music Outreach Project, which gives children from Hampshire Primary Schools the opportunity to join some of the Cathedral Choirs for a morning of music-making in the spectacular setting of Winchester Cathedral.
This year’s project has involved All Saints’, Nightingale, Shakespeare, The Crescent and Weeke Primary Schools, and the Music Outreach team have been visiting the schools over the last few months to hold music workshops in preparation for the big day. The primary school choirs will join together with The Pilgrims’ School Junior Commoners’ Choir and Winchester Cathedral Boy Choristers on Wednesday 27 June for a special celebration of music.
Directed by Christopher Burton (The Pilgrims’ School) and Nick Duncombe (Hampshire Music Service), the massed choir of around 200 children aged between 7 and 13 will perform a varied programme of music which includes songs from the shows, music from around the world, and much more.
Claudia Grinnell (Assistant Organist at Winchester Cathedral), who will be accompanying the concert, will also demonstrate the remarkable range of the Cathedral’s ‘Father’ Willis organ, a spectacular instrument with a range of ‘bells and whistles’ the likes of which many of the visitors may never have heard.
“Singing is renowned for being one of the most beneficial skills to have”, says Andrew Lumsden, the Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral. “This is especially so in choirs, as it brings musicians of whatever standard together in music-making and fellowship. We hope that this outreach concert will inspire the children, from joining a choir like their school choir or indeed one of the Cathedral Choirs or simply to sing at home in the shower!”
The event begins at 12noon on Wednesday 27 June at Winchester Cathedral.
Members of the media are welcome to this event. Interviews will be available from 11.30am (by request only); otherwise please arrive at the Cathedral Entrance Desk (inside the main entrance) at 11.45am for a 12 Noon start.
Those attending will need to register. Please do so with either of the contacts below before 12 Noon on Tuesday 26th.
