Throughout July and August, we have a number of free specialist subject tours for annual pass holders, led by our expert guides. These tours are perfect for those who want to dig deeper into the Cathedral’s thousand-year history.

Victorian Restoration – The Cathedral Transformed
Wednesday 4 July, 10.30AM
When Queen Victoria came to the throne the Cathedral was cold, dismal and colourless. This tour traces its remarkable transformation and introduces colourful Victorian personalities associated with the Cathedral.

A view of this great Church from 1079 to 1475, focusing on the builders, carvers, glassmakers and tilers.
The Marriage of England and Spain

Mary Tudor’s wedding to Prince Philip of Spain is the most famous wedding to ever take place in Winchester Cathedral. Discover the plots and intrigues in these turbulent times and eavesdrop on the sumptuous ceremony itself…
Walking on History
Wednesday 25 July: 10.30AM & 1.30PM
The expanse of tiles in Winchester Cathedral is the largest in-situ area of medieval tiles in the country and the tiles tell a fascinating story. This specialist tour gives an insight into how the fabric of the Cathedral has changed in tune with the times.
Are There Bones Beneath These Stones
Wednesday 1 August: 10.30AM & 1.30PM
Examination of the ledger stones can reveal stories from beneath them. We look at the people commemorated, the times they lived in, and learn more about what the inscriptions tell us.
Wednesday 8 August: 10.30AM & 1.30PM
Walk the Inner Close in the footsteps of the Benedictine monks and explore over 1000 years of history from monastic times, through the turbulence of the Civil War, up to the present day.Part of this tour is outside so please dress appropriately.
Stitched and Woven

See the Altar Frontals, Vestments and Cushions through the eyes of our expert Guides. They include some pieces of Spanish work believed to have been used at the marriage of Queen Mary in 1554 and a set of Vestments designed by Ninian Cooper.
Curious and Mysterious
Thursday 23 August: 10.30AM & 1.30PM
This tour will explain some the curious, quirky and mysterious happenings connected to the Cathedral and its monuments. A tour of surprises, revelations and fun!
