Lecture by Professor Roger Richardson, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Winchester and author of many books including Household Servants in Early Modern England (2010)
'Downton Abbey' and its runaway success is one further indication that servants' lives and master/servant relations in the past have now become a subject of absorbing interest. This lecture examines the subject over a longer period of time and offers some interesting and surprising conclusions.
