More about Michael:
It is a pleasure to welcome back a musician of the highest caliber to Winchester Cathedral for the 2018 Lunchtime Concert Series. Having been credited for “carrying the torch of the classical guitar into the 21st Century” (BBC Music), Michael Christian Durrant is an artist who recognises the importance of acknowledging and respecting the traditions of an art form that has produced some of the finest and most beautiful music ever made.
Michael continues to perform as a soloist all over the world and has recently presented recitals in New York, San Francisco and Sydney. Closer to home, Michael recently performed alongside the chamber choir at Winchester Cathedral in a special anniversary concert showcasing the music of Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, including a performance of his evocative Romancero Gitano, Op. 152 for guitar and chamber choir.
During his classical guitar studies, he worked with Maestro Carlos Bonell at the Royal College of Music, London (RCM) and Maestro Giulio Tampalini at the Accademia della Chitarra di Brescia, Italy. Furthermore, he is currently completing an MSc in Performance Science at the RCM, supported by a full scholarship from the RCM and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
Michael Christian Durrant plays a 2008 Greg Smallman concert guitar.
Lunchtime Recitals are free to attend and a retiring collection will be taken to defray expenses and support the cathedral music programme.
