Join Matthew Barley and his ensemble, a carefully assembled collection of some of the most talented London string players, for an evening to explore The Protecting Veil by the late Sir John Tavener.  Since its premiere at the BBC Proms 30 years ago in 1989 this piece has been popular the world over, with hundreds of live performances, regular air play on the radio and usage in film and television.  A CD will be launched during the evening.

In this concert Barley’s ‘Living Programme Notes’ bring detail and in-depth understanding to an audience with examples played by Barley and ensemble musicians.  The Protecting Veil, unveiled. Themes covered will include the influence of Indian classical music on Tavener and The Protecting Veil, the way in which Tavener used numbers and geometry, The Eternal Feminine, The Protecting Veil as a song for instruments, the map of Christian Orthodox feast days in the piece and how this is relevant, also for those who are not religious in understanding the piece, and why this is the best cello concerto written in the last 50 years.

The concert is the highlight of a Tavener Festival that includes an International Symposium Music, Spirituality, Wellbeing and Theology June 14th-15th, a Tavener Evensong on June 14th and two new 2019 recordings, including Angels.  Further reading.
