Winchester Festival: Earthly Delights and the Garden of Love

7th Jul 2018 7.45 PM - 7th Jul 2018 Event Type: Concert

Shakespeare seen through the eyes of New York‚Äôs teenage hoodlums and the earthy poetry of mediaeval scholars and clerics form this Waynflete Singers‚Äô Summer Concert. Carmina Burana sets medieval Latin and German poetry, penned by nomadic clerics, in praise of drinking, gambling, Spring, Fortune, Venus and the physical delights of love. The strict orders of monastic life are thrown into disarray by this poetic rebellion. Shakespeare‚Äôs ‚Äėstar-cross‚Äôd lovers‚Äô also create disarray and, through the vision of Leonard Bernstein, the teenage rebels of West Side Story form a landmark in the history of American musical theatre.
