Festive Family Fun








Keep the family entertained with a host of events and activities this Christmas!

Skate on our spectacular Ice Rink, explore the Cathedral grounds with our children’s trail, visit the newly transformed Nativity Chalet, sing cheerful carols at our Family Carol Services and join our family-friendly Lantern Parade on Thursday 29 November.


Winchester Cathedral Ice Rink is ideal for families, as recommended by Families Online and Days Out with the Kids. With penguin and banana skate aids and Parent & Toddler sessions available for just £11, a skate on our spectacular Ice Rink is the perfect way to keep your children entertained this Christmas.

Join Benedict Bear on ‘A Monk’s Trail’, an outdoor trail especially designed for families visiting our Christmas Market. You’ll learn lots of fascinating facts about the Cathedral as you help Benedict on his journey to find the Nativity.

‘A Monk’s Trail’ will be available from the Entrance Desk in the Cathedral from 17 November.


Don’t miss the Nativity Chalet, which this year has been inspired by drawings made by pupils at Stanmore Primary School. Ten drawings have been chosen to create a life-size Nativity Scene, created by Sophie Hacker, Arts Consultant at the Cathedral.

You’ll find the Nativity Chalet at the heart of the British Crafts Village.


Lantern Parade
Thursday 29 November, 6.30pm

Make your own Lantern with Bella Crafts and join a fun family parade starting from the Cathedral and processing around the Outer Close. Visit our What’s On page for more information.

Christmas Market Messy Church
Saturday 8 December, 2.30pm – 5.30pm, The Undercroft

Enjoy a range of Christmas story-themed craft activities suitable for all ages (including adults). Light snacks and drinks with be available. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Christmas Story-telling for Pre-Schoolers
Friday 21 December, 11.30am – 12noon

Enjoy a Christmas themed ‘make and take’ craft activity and hear the story of the first Christmas. No booking required.


Families are welcome to join us for all of our services, but the following services are especially designed for families and children to enjoy:

Christingle Service for Children’s Church
Sunday 9 December, 11.00am, The Undercroft / Wessex Learning 

A special Advent children’s service for children from years 1 – 7, accompanied by a carer / family, to celebrate the hope in the coming of Jesus Christ.

A Christmas Celebration – Family Carol Services
Sunday 9 and Sunday 16 December, 3.30pm

Join us for family-friendly afternoon carol services and enjoy cheerful carol singing in the magnificent Nave of the Cathedral. Visitors to the Christmas Market and Ice Rink are especially welcome.

Nativity Services
Monday 24 December, 11.00am & 3.00pm

Our Christmas Eve Nativity services are perfect for families. Children are encouraged to dress as characters from the Christmas story and, for those that wish, join together at the front of the Nave during the service. Collection for the Children’s Society.
