We want to help you get the most out of your visit. The Cathedral is at the heart of Winchester and beyond the Cathedral Close, there’s a lot to be discovered. We’ve put together some useful information to help you find out about the best places to stay, visit and enjoy while you are here
Information for groups
We ask that tour operators and group organisers planning a visit to the Christmas Market contact us in advance. We are able to provide a ‘meet and greet’ service for all coach arrivals, assist in arranging entry and tours to the Cathedral and refreshments. Please email the Visits Team, or call 01962 857200.
Parking and Travel
As with many historic cities, parking within the centre is limited and often congested during the Christmas period. Winchester has excellent rail and bus links to London, Southampton, Basingstoke, Reading, the Midlands and beyond. Where possible we strongly advise people to make sure of these facilities.
Winchester is just over an hour by direct train from Waterloo and is easily and quickly accessible from the following destinations: Basingstoke (20 minutes), Birmingham (2 hours, 20 minutes), Southampton (20 minutes), Poole (1 hour 5 minutes), Bournemouth (50 minutes), Portsmouth (1 hour), Brockenhurst, for the New Forest (30 minutes), Reading (30 minutes), London (1 hour 5 minutes).
Plan your journey with South Western Railway here:
If travelling by car is the only option, people make sure of the Park and Ride car parks which are located around the outskirts of the city. Winchester City Council operates an excellent and frequent service to all locations, whilst dropping off 2-3 minutes walk from the Cathedral. For more information please click here.
