Adam Wilson, who joined Winchester Cathedral as Virger in 2016, will soon be joining Lichfield Cathedral to become the youngest Head Verger in the country at the age of 26.
“Being a Verger has always been in my blood,” says Adam, as his father was a Head Verger at Beverley Minster and St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Adam became a voluntary Verger at Beverley Minster in his teens, before going on to work at York Minster and then the Chapel at Lancing College.
Having joined Winchester Cathedral in 2016, Adam reflects on his positive experience:
“It has been a great privilege to serve as a Virger at Winchester Cathedral and I have built up so many skills during my time here. I have received excellent training and mentoring under the direction of Custos, and Dickon, the Deputy Head Virger, who have shaped me into the individual I have become today. I now take on those key skills to my next role as Dean’s Verger of Lichfield Cathedral, and this brings great responsibility to prove I have what it takes, since becoming the youngest Head Verger in the country at the age of 26.
“I have made so many close friends at Winchester whom I shall continue to keep in touch with after I leave.”
Adam’s last day at Winchester Cathedral will be Sunday 12th June.
