All Saints’ Day – Thursday 1 November
All Souls’ Day – Friday 2 November
Remembrance Sunday – Sunday 11 November

After the clocks go back this weekend, Winchester Cathedral moves into one of its more solemn times, with services and ceremonies relating to remembrance of various kinds. In addition to the wider range of events announced recently to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, Remembrancetide is an important period for the church in its own right when we remember saints and souls across the centuries to the present day.

Thursday 1 November is All Saints’ Day, when the church celebrates not only the more well-known saints, but many whose sainthood is not known but who have been touched by faith whose faith has touched many others. There will be a Festal Evensong at 5.30pm.

In a change of mood, Friday 2 November is All Souls’ Day, when the church remembers the departed and is, for many, a poignant moment when they mark the passing of their own family and friends. There will be a Solemn Requiem at 5.30pm, when the names of those who have been requested for remembrance will be read, and at which the setting will be that of Maurice Fauré.

This year Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday (11 November) coincide, bringing to a fitting conclusion a four year marking of the centenary of the war. There will be the traditional City Remembrance Service at 10am, moving at slightly before 11am to the War Memorial outside when there will be two minutes silence and a ceremony that replicates that taking place in Whitehall and, indeed, around the country at the same time, precisely 100 years after the official cessation of hostilities.

Later in the day, at 6.50pm, we again join the end of the nation’s commemoration again for Battle’s Over, a short vigil with a piper and the lighting of a brazier to symbolise the lights coming back on over Europe.

All are welcome to any of these services.
