An unusual terracotta wall tile with a spiralling design. The words are from a famous fifth-century prayer for protection.
St Patrick’s Breastplate, or Lorica, was translated from the original Gaelic in 1889: “Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me…” The wording is in the shape of a spiral, a shape used by the early Christian church in Britain and Ireland to represent growth and fulfilment.
A comforting message to have upon the wall.
