Medieval Tiles takes us through the history, manufacture and fashions of this essential floor covering.
In the Middle Ages, richly-decorated tiles were found on floors of cathedrals, churches, palaces and the homes of the wealthy. Like today, tiles were used for their durability and because once laid, they were fairly low-maintenance. Many tiles vanished during later restorations; however some remain in situ, such as those in the Retrochoir in our cathedral.
