Giving in instalments

Our Appeal and the work it will support will take several years to complete. By choosing to spread your gift over time, you help us to plan for the long term, secure in the knowledge that we have income we can consistently rely on. Giving in this way can also help you to manage your support, in the knowledge that you are steadily helping to make a real difference.

Leave a gift in your will

The history of Winchester Cathedral is testament to the generosity of past generations.

74% of the UK population supports charities like ours, and when asked, 35% of them say they’d be happy to leave a gift in their will once they’d provided for their family and friends. But only 7% actually do.

Anyone can leave a gift in their will – it is easy to do and you can leave a specific amount or a percentage of your overall estate. Gifts to charities are free from Inheritance Tax and, from 6 April 2012, if you leave 10% of your estate to charity the tax due may be paid at 36% instead of 40%.

Make a gift of shares

You might have a large or a small shareholding – maybe shares you’ve acquired as a result of a privatisation or inheritance. Either way, you can turn these shares into something of real value if you donate them to charity. And an added benefit is that you can claim tax relief equal to the market value of the shares on the day you make the gift, together with any associated costs such as brokers’ fees.

Organising a fundraising event

Organising an event to raise funds for the Cathedral Appeal is a great way to raise money and have fun at the same time. Whatever you plan to do – from holding a coffee morning or dinner party to arranging a concert or sponsored event – you can rest assured that every pound you raise will make an enormous difference to making Winchester Cathedral secure for future generations to enjoy.

For ideas and advice on any of the above please email Zoe Seenan, our Campaign Director or call her on 01962 857241.
