The Elements of Sculpture: Curator’s Tour with Peter Walker

Peter Walker works across a vast array of media, from monumental sculpture, large scale installation artworks, fine art and light artworks. At the centre of his work is a reflection on the self, humanity and the wider questions we face in the world around us, expressed through intimate fine art sculptural bronzes to vast light installations, in which Peter curates large scale immersive light and sound experiences under the artistic name Luxmuralis.

Peter was the artist in residence and artistic director at Lichfield Cathedral for 7 years and has also acted as artistic director at Sheffield Cathedral, Artistic Consultant at Liverpool Cathedral and is currently Artistic Director at Winchester Cathedral.

“Much of my work is created for the interiors of Cathedrals and designed to interact with the grandeur of the space, an interplay between the art form and the architecture. This evokes physical and psychological reactions from audiences, and discourse around spirituality, the collective and the individual.”

He works across many and varied aspects of sculpture and fine art. His primary work is sculpture, (having to date created many major works around the UK) and work for private and corporate collectors. The majority of his work is in bronze or steel, although this is not exclusive to the materials he uses. In 2021 he produced Pity of War, for the National Memorial Arboretum – a 7ft bronze sculpture commemorating those who lost their lives as a consequence of war. Currently he is completing the 15ft Shirebrook Mining Memorial. He has created 19 public artworks around the UK, including the Statue of St Chad at Lichfield Cathedral and has work in collections around the world including; the British Embassy in Dubai, The Basilica of St Mary Minneapolis, British Embassy in Paris, British Embassy in UAE, National Maritime Museum Falmouth, Winchester Cathedral, Liverpool Cathedral.
