An exciting new creative collaboration by acclaimed sculptor and artist Peter Walker and Winchester Cathedral has been announced. The project launches on 1st October 2022 and promises to amaze visitors through a series of creative visual art activities and installations over the next few years.

Peter Walker is a sculptor and fine artist who has worked professionally for over 20 years in the development of public and fine contemporary art, installation artwork and projects featuring monumental bronze and other materials.

The Dean of Winchester, The Very Rev’d Catherine Ogle, said:  “I am delighted to welcome Peter back to Winchester Cathedral for this exciting creative collaboration. The Cathedral has been a place of great inspiration and wonder throughout its long history. By continuing to explore the relationship between worship and the arts, we invite all our visitors and worshippers to experience the Cathedral in a new way.”

The first installation at the cathedral, ‘Light of Hope’, is part of a wide-ranging engagement project which will involve thousands of young people from the county’s schools and community groups creating their own miniature Light of Hope. A huge-scale sculptural artwork, the Light of Hope Star, is an illuminated five metre diameter steel piece created to unify and represent hope. This striking contemporary artwork will be suspended high above the cathedral’s nave from 1st October 2022 until 1 January 2023 and can be seen as part of the general admission ticket.

In December, following the great success of “Science” Son et Lumiere in Winchester, the award-winning artistic collaboration known as ‘Luxmuralis’ return to the cathedral with ‘Star of Wonder’. This stunning audio-visual experience invites visitors to re-imagine the building’s ancient architecture through the use of transformative light and sound. This artwork will fill almost every inch of the Cathedral to encourage visitors to explore the Christian Nativity story via this immersive experience.

Artistic Director Peter Walker on Luxmuralis says: “We are delighted to return to the Cathedral and present this awe-inspiring work this Christmas.  Visitors will enjoy being immersed amongst the stars, walk through mesmerising sound and light installations and see the ‘Light of Hope Star’ sculpture which will take centre stage. Alongside composer David Harper whose music will fill the cathedral, we look forward to working again with the Cathedral team and seeing individuals and families enjoy this uplifting light show and beautiful music.”

Tickets for ‘Star of Wonder’ are on sale now and the Cathedral is offering a special launch day ticket price for the first evening only of the exhibition on 13th December. For full ticket prices and to book tickets, visit the website below.

The next scheduled Son et Lumiere  is the world premiere of Elements in early March 2023, with details set to be announced soon.
