Come and hear about the centuries-old relationship between local communities and their meadows which has created species-rich grasslands by traditional hay making and livestock grazing.

In 2024 Rachel Remnant and CPRE Hampshire set up the Bar End Meadows project, which has grown into Hampshire’s Magnificent Meadows project.

We have lost over 97% of our species-rich meadows in England, but we are now recognising their ecological, cultural and economic value. Whilst new meadows can be created, our heritage sites hold communities of plants that are adapted to the local conditions and hold unique assemblages that characterise the local area. Hear about how the project has found hidden scraps of meadow through Winchester and how the project works with partners to provide seed harvesting, hay making, oversowing and nature connection activities to involve everyone with our magnificent meadows.
