Winchester CathedralOn selected Sundays, Evensong will be preceded by a short, informal recital given by a host of talented organists.
All are welcome to join from 2.55pm – 3.35pm in the Quire. There is no entry cost for these informal recitals, donations are welcome upon exit.

Oliver Morrell, Sub-Organist at Winchester Cathedral
Oliver has been Sub-Organist since September 2024. Before moving to Winchester, he successively held organist positions at Durham Cathedral, Croydon Minster, and St Albans Cathedral. At St Albans, he played on two CD recordings and accompanied the cathedral choir on tours to Europe. Oliver graduated in 2021 with first-class honours from Durham University and has been awarded diplomas from the Royal College of Organists and the London College of Music. He is active as a recitalist and teacher and has had compositions premiered at the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music.

Richard Pinel, Royal Academy of Music & St Mary's, Bourne Street
Richard was awarded the organ scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford in 2002. During his time there, the Grammy-nominated college choir undertook several recording projects with Harmonia Mundi, on which Richard’s playing was hailed as ‘a force of nature’. More recently, Richard held a Junior Fellowship in the Organ Department of Royal Birmingham Conservertoire and has enjoyed competition success, winning the First Prize and both special prizes at the Breda International Organ Competition.
Between 2017 and 2021 he was Director of the Edington Festival and until December 2022 he was a Fellow and the Director of Music at Jesus College, Cambridge. Prior to his position at Jesus College, Richard was Assistant Director of Music at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. He previously held the organ scholarship at St Albans Cathedral.
Joshua Stephens, Sub-Organist at Winchester Cathedral
Acknowledged as one of Britain’s “most brilliant and exciting musicians” (Leeds Inspired), Joshua has broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, performed on national television, and guest conducted the City of London Sinfonia and The Sixteen. Prior to his role at Winchester Cathedral, Joshua was founding Director of Music at Steel City Choristers, Assistant and Acting Director of Music at Sheffield Cathedral, and Second Assistant Organist at Wells Cathedral. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, graduating with a First-Class degree with Honours, studying the organ with Darius Battiwalla and Thomas Trotter.
Dónal McCann, Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College
Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College, Donal is responsible for the musical education of the Quiristers. In his new role as Head of Choral Partnerships, he fosters relationships locally and further afield, creating new and inspiring musical experiences. His musical education began as a chorister at St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast, before taking up organ lessons with Professor Gerard Gillen at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral, Dublin. Dónal read music and was an organ scholar at King’s College, Cambridge, accompanying the world-renowned chapel choir in services, recordings, international tours and broadcasts, including A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. He graduated with a double first and took up the post of Assistant Organist at New College, Oxford. Whilst in Oxford he released his debut solo album to critical acclaim, featuring works by Bach and Walther. Dónal is co-principal keyboardist of the Oxford Bach Soloists, and as an international organ recitalist he recently performed in Westminster Abbey and opened the restored organ of St Lawrence Church, Vittoriosa in Malta. He has featured as a guest organists with many ensembles, including the Instruments of Time & Truth, the Ulster Orchestra and Academy of Ancient Music. He is also an award-winning composer, his music recently being performed by the BBC Singers on BBC Radio 3.
