Oliver Morrell, Sub-Organist at Winchester Cathedral
Oliver has been Sub-Organist since September 2024. Before moving to Winchester, he successively held organist positions at Durham Cathedral, Croydon Minster, and St Albans Cathedral. At St Albans, he played on two CD recordings and accompanied the cathedral choir on tours to Europe. Oliver graduated in 2021 with first-class honours from Durham University and has been awarded diplomas from the Royal College of Organists and the London College of Music. He is active as a recitalist and teacher and has had compositions premiered at the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music.
Roger Judd, Organ adviser to the Diocese of Hereford
Roger Judd’s musical journey has taken him from chorister at Winchester Cathedral, through an organ scholarship at Pembroke College, Cambridge, to the organ lofts at Ely Cathedral, St Michael’s College Tenbury Wells, and latterly St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, from which he retired in 2008 after 23 years. In recognition of that work, Roger was honoured by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with Membership of the Royal Victorian Order. In 2015 St Michael’s honoured him with the title of Organist Emeritus, of which he is very proud.
Now living near Hereford, for 15 years Roger was Sub Organist at St Laurence’s Ludlow until Easter 2024, and has been acting Organist and Choirmaster at St Michael’s, Tenbury since 2020. He is involved with the Diocese of Hereford Organists’ Training Scheme that helps aspiring organists raise their game; for six years he was chairman of the Herefordshire Organists’ Society. Presently he is the organ adviser to the Diocese of Hereford. Over the years he has played concerts in France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, the USA and Canada, and all around the UK.
He is absolutely delighted to be back playing in his beloved Cathedral where his life in music began eight decades ago!
Claudia Grinnell, Director of Music at St Edmundsbury Cathedral
Claudia began learning the organ at St Peter’s Collegiate Church in Wolverhampton, and was Organ Scholar there during her final years at school. She then studied at the University of Cambridge, receiving a first-class degree in Music. Whilst at university, she was Organ Scholar at Peterhouse, which was at the time a college where the organ scholars took full responsibility for the running of the Chapel Choir. Her final two years there saw the choir embark on tours to Reykjavík and Dublin.
Following a year as Organ Scholar at Salisbury Cathedral, she spent seven years on the music staff at Winchester Cathedral, latterly as Sub-Organist. During her time there she commissioned a number of new works for the Cathedral Choirs and the building of a new chamber organ. She also had particular responsibility for the Girls’ Choir, which celebrated their 25th anniversary in May 2024.
Claudia joined the team at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in September 2024 as Director of Music, the first woman to hold the post in the Cathedral’s history. Her first year with the choir saw an exciting programme of events, including a production of Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde in November alongside around 250 local schoolchildren. Alongside a busy schedule of services and concerts, the choir has recently recorded Dupré’s Quatre Motets, which is due for release in 2026.
Joshua Stephens, Sub-Organist at Winchester Cathedral
Acknowledged as one of Britain’s “most brilliant and exciting musicians” (Leeds Inspired), Joshua has broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, performed on national television, and guest conducted the City of London Sinfonia and The Sixteen. Prior to his role at Winchester Cathedral, Joshua was founding Director of Music at Steel City Choristers, Assistant and Acting Director of Music at Sheffield Cathedral, and Second Assistant Organist at Wells Cathedral. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, graduating with a First-Class degree with Honours, studying the organ with Darius Battiwalla and Thomas Trotter.
