Crucifixion Now, Resurrection Now is a two-part work that evokes the movement of Easter weekend — from the suffering of Good Friday to the radiance of Easter Day.
When closed, the work presents the Crucifixion: wounded wood from a cathedral workshop, marked by deep cuts, alongside black volcanic sand and blood-red lines, speaking of pain, earthiness, and sacrifice. When opened, the Resurrection is revealed — found materials transformed, gold catching the light, and circular forms hinting at eternity and the mystery of the Trinity.
Shown during Lent, Holy Week and Easter, the work invites quiet reflection on suffering held, transformed, and redeemed — and on the surprise, glory, and hope at the heart of the Resurrection.
The Exhibition
Alongside this central work, the exhibition presents a predominantly 2D display of paintings, drawings, prints, and archival material, with a small selection of 3D works including ceramics and wood. Together, they trace the development of an artist whose practice is deeply rooted in Christian theology and expressed through symbolism, material, and form.
Many visitors will already be familiar with Sophie’s work, even if they do not realise it. Significant commissions can be found throughout the Cathedral, including the Epiphany Chapel altar frontal, festal vestments, seasonal banners, the processional cross, the silver and enamel virge, the Alphege Chapel, as well as Creative Producer for the Chronicles of Light. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter these works — and others — in one place, and to explore the thinking and creative process behind them.
Missional Art: Beauty, Symbol, and Theology
Sophie’s work is missional in nature, exploring Christian theology through visual language. Accessible and affordable, it seeks to witness to the Beauty of Holiness, inviting reflection and encounter for people of faith and for those simply drawn by art and place.
For Our Community — and Beyond
This exhibition is for everyone. Whether you know the Cathedral well or are visiting for the first time, and whether or not you have an art background, these works invite you to pause, look, and reflect. Long-standing members of the congregation, staff, and the wider community will recognise familiar commissions seen in new ways, while visitors, pilgrims, students, schools, universities, and art colleges are warmly welcomed to discover the stories behind them.
Some visitors may wish to come to the Cathedral especially to see the exhibition, while others may encounter it as part of their visit. However you arrive, you are very welcome.
Supporting the Mission of the Cathedral
A selection of works will be available for purchase, offering visitors the opportunity to invest in a piece of Sophie’s work. Proceeds will support the mission and ministry of Winchester Cathedral.
