This tour tells the incredible story of William Walker, ‘the diver who saved the Cathedral with his own hands’. Led by a knowledgeable guide, you’ll explore how a single man, working in near-impossible conditions, saved the Cathedral from collapse. This tour offers the chance to ask questions, see key locations, and gain a deeper understanding of an engineering feat that quite literally kept the building standing.

In the early 1900s the Cathedral, built about 950 years ago on marshy ground, was subsiding and in danger of collapse – desperate measures were needed to save it.

Enter William Walker, a deep sea diver, who, over six years, undertook one of the greatest, and most dangerous, civil engineering feats of all time.

The tour will take you inside and outside the Cathedral to see how Walker worked under water in deep pits to strengthen the foundations and save the building.

Practical information:
