Join Oliver Jessup, Consultant Archaeologist at Winchester Cathedral, as he shares insights from a recent excavation within the Cathedral Close.

While improving drainage in Dome Alley and nearby properties, archaeologists undertook careful monitoring and excavation within this Scheduled Monument site — where every dig requires consent from Historic England and DCMS and must be meticulously recorded. The work has revealed:

  • Medieval pottery
  • A fragment of Roman amphora
  • A possible glazed floor tile
  • A 16th–early 17th century Nuremberg jeton (coin)

With excavation now complete, the next phase involves cleaning, processing and reporting on these finds, which will become part of the Cathedral’s permanent archaeological archive.
