City Walk – General Theme
Pupils will be taken on a guided walk of Winchester with one of our Learning Team. The focus of this walk will be on the history of the city. Starting outside The Great Hall pupils will be led by one of our Learning Team back down the High Street to the Cathedral, stopping at key points on the way.
Tip: The walk from the Cathedral to The Great Hall is 0.4 miles and the walk back will be the same route. Pupils will also need to cross a busy road at a set of traffic lights where Southgate Street and High Street join. If you are unsure of this route, we advise that you walk it in advance.
Medieval Medicine
Pupils will learn how people understood the human body in the past, the medicine and remedies they thought would help and how your social class determined what kind of medical help you received, hundreds of years before the NHS. They will then play a role playing game where they work in pairs to be a patient or a healer or physician. After their diagnosis pupils will make a pomander using a mortar and pestle to crush up herbs, which they can take home.
Tip: Please ensure that you bring boxes, trays or tubs with you to transfer the pomanders back to school. If you would like pupils to take their pomanders straight home with them after the trip, to ensure the pomader doesn’t leak inside their school bag, pupils may want to bring a spare paper or plastic bag with them.
Visit to Kings and Scribes Exhibition with Quiz
Pupils will have some time to explore our Kings and Scribes Exhibition in the Cathedral. There are three floors which focus on different periods of the Cathedral’s history. The Winchester Bible has its own room on the Ground Floor. The Learning Team will provide print outs of our Kings and Scribes Exhibition quiz booklet, clipboards and pencils.
Tip: There is a maximum limit of 15 pupils at a time into the exhibition and this must be booked in advance so that our Exhibition Stewards can support us. We will factor this in when planning your timetable of the day. Please note that members of the public will also be in the exhibition at the same time as your school.
