Rehearsals are underway as Winchester Cathedral readies itself for a joyful, sing-along Christmas debut.

The historic sound of Christmas is once again rising beneath the ancient arches of Winchester Cathedral — but this year, something entirely new is taking shape. The Cathedral’s Lay Clerks and Girl Choristers are already deep in rehearsal for a brand-new festive fundraising event, It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas: A Christmas Cracker Concert,” taking place on Thursday 4 December 2025 at 7.30pm.

Music has echoed through this majestic building for over a thousand Christmases, yet this is the first concert of its kind: an immersive, sing-along celebration designed not only to bring the community together, but also to support the Cathedral’s vital conservation and outreach work.

With tickets priced at £20 per person, every seat sold directly helps safeguard Winchester Cathedral’s historic fabric and fund its ongoing heritage, education, and community projects. As a registered charity, the Cathedral relies heavily on events like this to continue its mission and ensure the building remains protected for future generations.

The programme features classics from The Snowman alongside beloved carols and festive favourites including White Christmas, O Come All Ye Faithful, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, and The Twelve Days of Christmas. Audiences are invited to sing along throughout — a communal experience reminiscent of families gathering around the piano for Christmas songs in years gone by.

The evening will also include a reading from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, a timeless reminder of generosity, goodwill, and the importance of supporting one’s community.

Rehearsals are already filling the Cathedral with the sparkle of the season as the choristers prepare for what promises to be a heartwarming night of music, candlelight, and collective celebration — all in aid of a vital cause.

Tickets can be booked online, by calling 01962 857 275, or in person at the Cathedral Box Office.

As one supporter put it:
“A great way to make a donation to support Winchester Cathedral, whilst also having a fun night out with friends! A truly feel-good Christmas experience that will leave you feeling festive.”
