Enchanting open-air theatre coming to Winchester Cathedral

This July, outdoor theatre specialists Quantum Theatre will be heading to Winchester Cathedral to perform the first open-air theatrical production at the Cathedral since the pandemic began. With warmer weather predicted for the rest of the month, watching a classic production in the Hampshire sunshine is a great way to spend time with friends and family this year.

The company, which is known for its new and immersive adaptations of classic texts and Shakespeare plays, will perform ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny’ in the atmospheric setting of Winchester Cathedral’s Deanery River Garden on Friday 23rd July at 2.30pm and 5pm.

The play follows Peter Rabbit and his naughty cousin Benjamin on their hair-raising adventures into Mr McGregor’s garden, bringing with it a lively brand of comedy, music and magic to this new adaptation of the much loved Beatrix Potter classic.

All Quantum productions are written, adapted and directed by the Artistic Director, Michael Whitmore, whose work captures the essence and spirit of the original texts whilst presenting them in a fast-paced, tightly choreographed and highly entertaining style.

Alison Evans, COO at Winchester Cathedral said, “At a time when restrictions are easing, this is a safe way of inviting the public back to enjoy a theatre experience against the backdrop of our marvellous and historic building. The play itself will be in the Deanery River Garden, a secret area set within the Cathedral grounds which has beautiful surroundings. We are delighted to welcome a company of this calibre to the Cathedral for what we’re certain will be a memorable and immersive experience for the audience.”

The performance will be carried out with COVID-19 safety regulations in place and guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or picnic chair to sit on. Refreshments will be available from Mr.Todd’s kiosk which will be open on the day of the performance selling a selection of hot and cold drinks.

Tickets are £16 for adults and £12 for children aged 2-16 years. Children under 2 years are free and booking fees apply. Tickets are available to buy now via the Winchester Cathedral Box Office.
