Throughout Holy Week, a daily video reflection will be shared on the Cathedral’s YouTube channel, on the theme of ‘Hope in Darkness’.
The series begins with Bishop Debbie on Palm Sunday, followed by the Cathedral’s Canons and Lay Canons throughout the week, and ending with a reflection from Dean Catherine on Easter Day.

Holy Week Reflection Video Series
Palm Sunday
Bishop Debbie Sellin reflects on Jesus’s servant leadership, which is modeled today in those opening up their homes and greeting refugees as well as those packing and driving trucks of donations across Europe.
Holy Monday
Lay Canon Jane Hands illustrates the theme of ‘Hope in Darkness’ through the hymn ‘My Song is Love Unknown’ written by Samuel Crossman, who was expressing his faith in very dark times.
Holy Tuesday
Canon Andy Trenier speaks about the Tenebrae service taking place at 7:45pm on Holy Tuesday, and provides a simple metaphor for Jesus’s death and resurrection, which is simply that ‘Jesus wins’, as God has victory over his foe Satan.
Holy Wednesday
Lay Canon George Medd reflects on the significance of the bells. How they can bring joy, how they can produce a powerful but mournful sound when rung half muffled at occasions such as funerals, and how in Holy Week the bells are silenced all together, reflecting the quiet and contemplative time.
Maundy Thursday
Lay Canon Mark Byford reflects on the upcoming Maundy Thursday services, talking from the Holy Sepulchre chapel, a chapel which features stunning wall paintings from the 12th century, marking events from Holy Week.
Good Friday
Canon Roly Riem reflects on how Good Friday is day of such importance, as it relates to a universal experience which all human beings come into contact with, death. Canon Roly also reflects on how the images of Jesus on the cross (which can be found throughout the cathedral) provide small clues about what death might mean.

Canon Tess Kuin Lawton reflects on the story of Holy Saturday, particularly highlighting that when we experience death and grief, we are often met with a feeling of disbelief that the world continues to go on around us.
