Families across Hampshire are flocking to Winchester Cathedral this summer to take part in the hugely popular Jane Austen-themed family trail, bringing the world of the beloved author to life!
Children aged 5–11 are duelling with foam swords, galloping through horse races, writing witty rhymes, cutting out Regency-style silhouettes, and joining in with card games, all inspired by Jane Austen’s era and the characters who shaped her stories.
“I have two young boys who both loved the cathedral’s summer trail. They’ve never even read a Jane Austen book but after our visit, I think they’ll take more of an interest, which I’m delighted about!” – Hannah, visitor, photographed.
The trail is free with an annual pass, available from the Cathedral’s Welcome Desk. Children aged 11 and under enjoy free entry to the Cathedral when accompanied by a paying adult, making it an affordable summer holiday activity for families. Come back as many times as you like in 12 months and only pay once!
Visitors are also taking the rare opportunity to view a handwritten poem by Jane Austen, composed in memory of her friend Anne Lefroy. On display for a limited time only, the poem offers a unique glimpse into Austen’s personal life and literary voice.
