Kings & Scribes wins prestigious award

Kings and Scribes AwardWinchester Cathedral has been praised for its Kings and Scribes exhibition in the annual UK Heritage Awards, coming out top in its category for Most Improved Heritage Development.

The esteemed annual UK Heritage Awards celebrates the very best of historic sites, houses, gardens and museums across 12 categories, with winners of other categories including Bletchley Park, and Birdoswald Fort at Hadrian’s Wall.

Commended for its stunning, fully accessible three-level exhibition space, the Kings and Scribes exhibition was the result of a 7-year project which opened in 2019. The judges said:

“This has been a long-term project which now allows visitors to explore over 1000 years of English history. This inspiring and educational experience offers visitors the opportunity to learn all about the significance of this historic building within the wider story of English history.”

The Receiver General and Canon Treasurer, Annabelle Boyes MBE, who led the 7-year project which opened in 2019 said:

“It has been a truly amazing experience to turn a vision into reality. Supported and enriched by so many of our specialist staff members, professional contractors and our wonderful volunteers.

‘The passion that has been shared in developing our major exhibitions has meant that Kings & Scribes exceeds everyone expectations.”

Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, is open to visitors every day and explores over 1,000 years of history unlocking the treasures and stories of the cathedral’s past, from Anglo-Saxon Kings to the beautiful 12th Century Winchester Bible.
