One day, another stonemason or archaeologist will read the marks left by my tools, just as today I read the marks of those who worked here hundreds of years ago, as if they were text. They tell me how a mason held their chisel, how precisely they fitted the stone, how carefully they worked the joints. The cathedrals we admire today are the work of countless people - those who designed them, quarried and transported the stone, built them, and simply did their work honestly and skilfully. Generations followed, repairing, strengthening, extending and preserving what others had left behind.
