The Cathedral Close and surrounding grounds provide a peaceful environment for visitors to enjoy throughout the summer months. However, prolonged periods of dry weather have increased the risk of fire, making everyone responsible for helping to protect these historic grounds and local wildlife.
Visitors are asked to:
- Dispose of cigarettes safely and responsibly.
- Take all litter home or use designated bins.
- Disposable barbecues or open flames are strictly forbidden anywhere within Cathedral grounds.
- Report any signs of fire or smoke immediately to the emergency services by dialling 999.
Jonathan Ryan, Director of Works at Winchester Cathedral, said:
“The recent fire in the New Forest is a reminder of how quickly fires can spread during dry conditions. We are asking everyone visiting the Cathedral and Close to take a few simple precautions to help protect this special place, its historic fabric, trees, wildlife and surrounding community.”
Visitors are encouraged to remain vigilant throughout the summer and help preserve the Cathedral’s grounds for everyone to enjoy.
