The temporary gates have been installed and are adorned with snippets of the gate's history.

Last week the oak gates, believed to date from the 15th century, were successfully removed and transported to a local specialist workshop and conservation work has begun in line with the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act. Thank you to all involved in the carefully planning of this phase and to our visitors and residents for their patience during the short closure period.

Temporary gates, the cost of which is generously being supported by Alfred Homes, were installed immediately after the existing gates were removed.

Sponsorships like this are important to the conservation of the cathedral and Alfred Homes’ creative expertise has enabled Winchester Cathedral to share with visitors to the close the history behind the gates.
