Top five displays to look out for at the Winchester Cathedral Flower Festival 2021

Enjoy a range of spectacular designs and installations, which will provide an experience for all the senses, at this year’s Flower Festival taking place from the 15th – 19th September.

Designed by the award-winning Pip Bensley, this year’s Festival aims to stir spirits, and to trigger memories, in ways that create joy, hope and healing.

Here are five displays that you won’t want to miss:

A showstopper in the Nave

Take in the awe-inspiring Cathedral Nave which will be framed by six, giant 15-foot trees. Each tree will be decorated with native tree branches and glint with dramatic jewel-like tones of joyful pink, orange and lime flowers which celebrate our re-connection with the natural world around us.

Explore sound with Anthony Gormley’s sculpture

Venture into the atmospheric Crypt where Anthony Gormley’s Sound II sculpture is located. We encourage you to listen hard to hear sentences from the pandemic. Pause, be still and listen for people’s words.

Vintage takeover

See the quirky vintage laboratory of interesting flowers and foliage including many with scent or aromatic fragrances. Don’t forget to look up – vintage records will be suspended in the air, adorned with autumnal fruits and flowers.

Leave a special message on the tree of hope

Take a moment to remember those we have lost but also to look forward with hope to a better future. Our tree of hope is here for you to leave your own special message of hope or celebration of the life of a lost loved one. We have special yellow tags for those who lost a loved one to Covid-19.

Dazzling dahlia lines

Don’t miss out on this interactive piece, where visitors can engage with our dahlias in an ‘up close and personal’ way, and in turn create an installation! Visitors are invited to pick a bloom (there will be a mixed variety of Dahlia’s to choose from which will create a riot of colour) and place it in a flower test tube, located in the Cloister Garth to create an effect of ‘pom pom’ rows on the ground.
