The celebrated Deanery at Winchester Cathedral which dates back to the time of Henry VIII is now available for short-term holiday rental, for the first time before a new Dean takes residence next year.

The interior of the Deanery has been comprehensively furnished and presented to the highest standard with the support of more than 50 businesses, including Hampshire-based companies along with companies from every corner of the UK.

Boasting features such as a 70-foot long gallery – originally created to entertain Charles II of England – and a Roman mosaic in the porch, the Deanery is set within the inner Cathedral Close and its residential community including priests and virgers, behind the main entrance to the Close, distinguished by a regal coat of arms mounted above the 15th-century archway.

The abundant garden with veteran trees and mature flower beds, lovingly maintained by the Cathedral’s gardening team, extends to the gin-clear waters of the river.

Artefacts on display inside the building include artworks from former deans, the typical vestments worn by a dean and sculpture from the 14th century.

Among the companies that have supported the enhancement of the interior are designer Abigail Ahern, Culinary Concepts and the River Test distillery – the latter two both based in Hampshire – plus the Winchester branch of Bang + Olufsen, Orchid Furniture and Mayfly Vintage both from Stockbridge and Andrew Smith & Son from Alresford.

Alasdair Akass, Director of Development at Winchester Cathedral, said: “This is a quintessential British home that has been brought bang up to date with the support of many valued suppliers. Renting the Deanery is a one-of-a-kind opportunity and we look forward to welcoming families to enjoy its tranquil and beautiful setting.”

Kate Jerome, Founder and Managing Director of Culinary Concepts, said: “It’s been a genuine privilege to support Alasdair and his team on this remarkable project. Their vision resonates deeply with our own values, and to be part of enhancing the guest experience in such a deeply historic and spiritually significant place has been both humbling and inspiring. This opportunity has allowed us not only to showcase our designs in a truly breathtaking setting but also to give back to a cultural landmark of immense national and especially local importance. As a company proud to call the county of Hampshire, home, we’re truly honoured to have played a part in this prestigious chapter of the Deanery’s history.”

Georgia Metcalfe, Founder and Creative Director at French Bedroom, said: “Being invited to contribute to the styling of The Deanery at Winchester Cathedral is both a creative privilege and a personal joy. As one of the most historically and architecturally important residences in the country, it provides a unique setting that perfectly complements the timeless and enduring spirit of our designs. Most importantly, this collaboration is about purpose. By booking a stay at The Deanery at Winchester Cathedral, guests are directly supporting the maintenance and operation of the Cathedral. Their stay will help to preserve this extraordinary place of wonder, beauty and inspiration for generations to come, and we are honoured to play a role in this.”

The first family to rent the Deanery – whose surname happens to be Winchester – are from the US and will occupy the building for 10 weeks for a family reunion.

The Deanery, which sleeps up to 10 people, is available for bookings of three nights or longer. For more information, visit https://www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk/deanery-lettings/
