Vote for the Christmas Market!

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market short-listed for Best Christmas Market in Europe 2020!

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market has been short-listed as one of Europe’s top 20 Christmas Markets by European Best Destinations and is now in the running to be crowned the best Christmas Market in Europe 2020.

Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market is often acclaimed as one of the best in Europe, with over 100 chalets to explore. Visitors travel from far and wide to soak up the bustling festive atmosphere in the historic Inner Close, with spectacular views of Winchester Cathedral. Inspired by traditional German Christmas Markets, the Christmas Market offers tempting seasonal treats, exclusive Christmas gifts and a stunning Ice Rink for visitors to enjoy.

Last year, Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market was voted 2nd best in the UK in a Booking.com poll whilst the New York Post hailed Winchester as one of the most magical Christmas cities in Europe.

Voting for Europe’s Best Christmas Market 2020 will be live on the following web page from 00:01 on 29 November – to 23:59 on 10 December: www.europeanbestdestinations.com/christmas-markets

The Christmas Market with the most votes will be crowned the best Christmas Market in Europe 2020, succeeding Tallinn who won the title of Best Christmas Market in Europe 2019. Previous winners include Strasbourg and Zagreb.

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market is open daily from Thursday 21 November – Sunday 22 December from 10.00am, until 6.30pm Sunday to Wednesday and 8.00pm Thursday to Saturday. Admission to the Christmas Market is free.

Located at the heart of the Christmas Market, Winchester Cathedral Ice Rink will be open from Thursday 21 November – Sunday 5 January from 10am – 9am (last session starts at 8pm). Ice Rink tickets are available from £6.95 – £11.50. Advanced booking is advised, especially for weekend skating, and tickets are available from the Cathedral Box Office on 01962 857276 or online.

Visitors should also take time to explore the magnificent Cathedral itself, one of the finest medieval Cathedrals in Europe. With a towering Christmas tree and traditional carol services throughout December, Winchester Cathedral really does epitomize the true joy of Christmas.

Potential disruption to your visit, January 2026

Capital works at Winchester Cathedral

As part of the essential works taking place, the toilets at Winchester Cathedral will be out of order for necessary maintenance from 5 to 29 January, with the nearest toilets in nearby Market Lane.

The refurbishment work is an essential part of caring for our buildings and making them as safe, comfortable, and practical for our visitors as we can.

From 5 – 23 January scaffolding will be in place in the nave, and there will be high levels of noise disruption on 6, 7, 13, 22 and 23 January. On these dates, there will be no guided tours.

From 5 – 23 January, the top floor of the Kings & Scribes exhibition will be closed due to maintenance taking place on the exhibition stair rail.

The best way to support Winchester Cathedral is to buy an annual pass. For just £14, you can visit as many times as you like, and to experience our exhibitions including Luke Jerram’s Helios in January and February, plus get an update on our treasured mortuary chests which have been the subject of decades of mystery and research.

Entry to the Cathedral for worship is always free.
