As people set New Year’s resolutions, Winchester Cathedral is looking to fill 20 places in the girls’ choir at their annual ‘Be a Chorister’ open event.

On Saturday 24th January 2026, girls who love singing will meet current choir girls, try on cassocks and sing in the 900-year old cathedral with the chance to be part of a tradition going back centuries.

“Being a chorister is wonderful. We sing together three times a week, building strong friendships along the way,” said one existing chorister.

“We support and encourage each other in every rehearsal and service, we sing some of the most beautiful music ever written in a building where people have been singing for nearly 1,000 years,” said another.

A third chorister said: “If you love singing and want to do something special, you should definitely think about becoming a chorister.”

A parent of a girl chorister said: “We are forever grateful that we spotted the Be a Chorister for a Day advert. I was looking for a way for my daughter to build friendships outside school and to do something stretching and unique, and we found it.

“The day was brilliantly constructed and gave a true taste of what it would be like to be a chorister (and a chorister parent!). My year 6 child was mesmerised and absolutely committed to doing what she could to join the choir.

“The cathedral spots natural talent – a pure voice twinned with natural poise, and they bring the education and experience. And what an experience. My now year 9 daughter absolutely loves it, and being a chorister complements her school life perfectly.”
