Winchester Cathedral supports the Winchester Cycling Charter

Winchester Cathedral has accepted the invitation to be a Founding Signatory to the Winchester Cycling Charter, to promote cycling as an everyday means of transport for people of all ages and abilities.

Winchester Cathedral recognises cycling as a key means of tackling the congestion, pollution and unhealthy lifestyle challenges facing the city, and supports Winchester and Hampshire leaders in delivering a better, more sustainable future through a convenient and connected cycle network.

Cycling not only meets many travel needs in the local community; it also boosts economic productivity, supports local businesses and contributes to people’s physical and mental well-being.

The Rev Canon Roland Riem said, “Winchester Cathedral is working hard to operate more sustainably and is working on many fronts to meet the wider commitment of the Church of England to carbon neutrality by 2030. Our signing this Charter is one way in which we can demonstrate our wish to promote the wellbeing of the whole City”.

Rob Jordan, a member of the Winchester Cycling Charter team, said “When you consider the research into positive aspects of enabling more cycling it is obvious that it improves both the physical and psychological well-being of employees, leading to reduced absenteeism. Add to this the benefits of reduced congestion, less pollution and reduced health-care costs for society and you begin to see that cycling can unlock the city and keep business thriving”.

The Winchester Cycling Charter can be found at https://winchestercyclingcharter.org.uk/

Potential disruption to your visit, January 2026

Capital works at Winchester Cathedral

As part of the essential works taking place, the toilets at Winchester Cathedral will be out of order for necessary maintenance from 5 to 29 January, with the nearest toilets in nearby Market Lane.

The refurbishment work is an essential part of caring for our buildings and making them as safe, comfortable, and practical for our visitors as we can.

From 5 – 23 January scaffolding will be in place in the nave, and there will be high levels of noise disruption on 6, 7, 13, 22 and 23 January. On these dates, there will be no guided tours.

From 5 – 23 January, the top floor of the Kings & Scribes exhibition will be closed due to maintenance taking place on the exhibition stair rail.

The best way to support Winchester Cathedral is to buy an annual pass. For just £14, you can visit as many times as you like, and to experience our exhibitions including Luke Jerram’s Helios in January and February, plus get an update on our treasured mortuary chests which have been the subject of decades of mystery and research.

Entry to the Cathedral for worship is always free.
