Winchester Cathedral welcomes new Cathedral Archaeologist
Winchester Cathedral has today announced the appointment of a new Cathedral Archaeologist following the retirement of Dr John Crook earlier this year.
With thirty years of experience in the industry, Chiz Harward joins the Cathedral at a pivotal time. Following recovery from the pandemic, the Dean and Chapter will look to the long-term sustainability of the Cathedral and its estate, and its very special historic nature.
Before his work as a freelance archaeologist, Chiz’s career included roles with Archaeology South East, Cotswold Archaeology and Museum of London Archaeology, in which he was involved with a range of projects from small domestic sites to some of Britain’s largest and most complex excavations, including the priory, hospital and cemetery of St. Mary, Spitalfields.
As a freelance archaeologist, Chiz will bring a huge range of professional services which will be invaluable to the Cathedral such as site supervision, assessment and analysis of digs, post-excavation and research, training of Cathedral staff and volunteers, and illustration. Chiz particuarly specialises in the excavation and analysis of complex urban, monastic and ecclesiastical sites, having worked on numerous parish churches, as well as conducting recording work at Gloucester Cathedral where he works alongside the Cathedral stonemasons.
Chiz Harward said, “I am thrilled and honoured to be appointed as the new Cathedral Archaeologist at Winchester. Winchester Cathedral holds a very special place in our shared history; it is a magnificent building with so many fascinating associations and stories to tell. I look forward to becoming part of the team involved with its conservation and development for the benefit of all who visit and enjoy it”.
Chiz will work closely with the newly appointed Cathedral Architect, and will be a valued member of the consultants’ team, led by the Dean and Chapter. As part of the role, Chiz will support the development of knowledge of the archaeology of the Cathedral and its precinct, and will be responsible for the liaison with the Cathedral’s academic institution partners. Chiz will also provide expert advice on the care and conservation of the historic fabric of the Cathedral, which will be critical in making future decisions and investments in its buildings.
Welcoming Chiz’s appointment, Alison Evans, Chief Operating Officer at Winchester Cathedral said, “I am delighted by Chiz’s appointment and I’m confident that he will serve the Cathedral with distinction, just as Dr John Crook did before him. Chiz brings with him significant experience of working with heritage buildings and conservation, and a sensitivity to the issues that surround them. The team at Winchester look forward to working with him as we embrace the responsibilities, challenges and opportunities of conserving, and learning more about these historic buildings”.
