With great sadness

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Simon Barwood, Media and Communications Officer, colleague and great friend to many at Winchester Cathedral. Simon passed away on 21 July after suffering a cardiac arrest.

A long serving member of the Cathedral community, Simon started as a Lay Clerk in 1997. He developed a great understanding of the Cathedral through his role in the choir, which he applied in his next role, as a valued member of the marketing and communications team.

Canon Annabelle Boyes MBE, Receiver General and Canon Treasurer, who worked closely with Simon over the years, said “It is deeply upsetting news that Simon has passed away and he will be sorely missed. He was an incredibly popular member of the team and Cathedral community. Our prayers and thoughts go to his family.”

The Dean of Winchester, the Very Revd Catherine Ogle, said “Simon was a faithful and cherished member of the community. He will be sadly missed.”

Details of a memorial service will be announced soon.

The North Transept accessibility lift is currently out of service. Due to concert staging, ramp access cannot be provided, so wheelchair access to the East End will not be available until the evening of Saturday 28 March. From then, access will be via ramp until repairs to the platform lift are complete. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
