Some of the Cathedral’s most vital work has been funded through legacies and in-memory donations.

“Every day, I count myself incredibly lucky to work in such a splendid and inspiring place; a Cathedral that brims with life, worship, music, ministry and a truly vibrant future.

One of the great joys of my role is meeting people from all walks of life. Each has their own story, yet all share one thing in common: a deep affection for this beautiful Cathedral and a heartfelt desire to see it flourish for generations to come.

A question I’m often asked is: “How can I help?” and while there are many wonderful ways to lend your support, one of the most meaningful is by leaving a gift in your Will. It’s a powerful, lasting way to help ensure that the Cathedral remains a beacon of love, hope and strength in our community for years, and even centuries, ahead.

We understand that including a gift in your Will is a thoughtful and personal decision. If it’s something you’re considering, I’d be more than happy to have a chat, whether over a cup of tea, in person, or simply over the phone, whenever suits you best.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch: email me at alasdair.akass@winchester-cathedral.org.uk or call 01962 857241. I’d be delighted to hear from you.”

How others have helped

Jean and Peter's story

“We are privileged to have been volunteers in Winchester Cathedral for several years. We have loved being members of the Cathedral Community and to have played a small part in the evolving history of this amazing building, a place that means so much to so many people.

As with all historic buildings, maintenance and improvements are ongoing expenses and we shall be leaving a gift in our Wills as a ‘Thank you’ for all that the Cathedral has given us by enriching our lives in so many different ways.

We hope that our gift will help to ensure that the Cathedral continues to be a special place, enjoyed by the many people who will come after us.”

How others have helped

Submitted by an anonymous donor

“I’ve always loved Winchester! There’s something very special about this place, especially the beautiful cathedral and its surrounding estate. It’s been part of my life for so long, and I wanted to do something to ensure that my family (and their families) can benefit from the same sense of belonging that I’ve enjoyed.

And, if I’m honest, while it’s not just about the tax benefits, it was helpful to know that gifts to charity are exempt from Inheritance Tax. Knowing that a legacy gift might also reduce the overall tax bill for my estate made it feel like a good decision all round.

In the end, I chose to name three of my favourite charities in my will, and it really wasn’t hard to decide that Winchester Cathedral should be one of them.”

Thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of those who have chosen to leave a gift in their will, recent legacies have helped support the following areas of need.

Life and work of the cathedral

The cathedral’s traditions, worship, and community engagement, ensuring the cathedral remains a welcoming and spiritually vibrant place for all.

Music of the cathedral

Choristers’ education, vocal training and development to maintain the high standards of music that enrich the music experience for worshippers and visitors. The cost of sustaining this excellence is approximately £0.9 million annually.

Heritage of the cathedral

Our long-term project for making vital repairs and maintenance to the extensive South Nave Aisle exterior wall.  Up close, a wealth of detail is visible; finely carved stone, grotesques and gargoyles and delicate, sensitive and descriptive stained glass, which takes skilled craftspeople to conserve and restore at a cost which is estimated to be in the region of £1.5 million over 10 years.

Essential expenses of the cathedral

The essential expenses such as lighting and heating, which are crucial to maintaining a warm and welcoming environment for all who visit, as well as the salaries of dedicated staff who keep the cathedral running, from clergy and musicians to maintenance and administrative teams.
