Winchester Cathedral has been a living place of worship and welcome for over 900 years. Please note that access to the Cathedral can be limited during special events or unforeseen circumstances. Please check our closure notices below before you travel and be aware that closures can be scheduled at short notice.
Welcoming dogs
We will welcome visitors who arrive with a dog. This will apply only during general cathedral opening hours for visitors.
Dogs are allowed at services. Designated seating applies. In the Nave – towards the West End away from other people. In the Quire – in the South Presbytery seating area. In Chapels – away from other people. It is required that if the dog becomes noisy or distracting that the owner takes the dog out quickly and without fuss. Dogs do not come to the communion rail.
Dogs are not permitted at ticketed events.
To ensure an excellent experience for everyone, these requirements will be adhered to:
- The dog will be kept under control, well-behaved and on a short lead at all times
- One dog per visitor
- The owner to clear up after the dog if an accident happens. Spill kits will be held at the Welcome Desk and Virgers’ Vestry and be given to the owner if they do not carry their own.
- Should the dog be disruptive in any way eg by barking or harassing others, the owner would be expected to leave.
