Under the baton the new Musical Director, Sarah Baldock, of Winchester Music Club celebrates Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, in Winchester Cathedral on 22 November 2022.

Sarah is no stranger to Winchester, prior to becoming Organist and Master of the Choristers at Chichester Cathedral and more recently Organist at Cheltenham Ladies College, she was founder Director of the Girls’ Choir and Assistant Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral.

Winchester Music Club Choir and Orchestra will be joined by Winchester College Chapel Choir and Glee Club to perform English composer Gerald Finzi’s “For St Cecilia”, a ceremonial ode for tenor solo, chorus & orchestra, on the 75th anniversary of its premier in the Royal Albert Hall. Nicky Spence, who regularly stars at major opera houses worldwide and is winner of the BBC Musician Magazine Personality of the Year 2022, will be the tenor soloist.

WMC is delighted to welcome soprano Anna Dennis back to Winchester. She first performed with us in back in 2009 and has since made many appearances around the world including at the Proms, ROH, ENO, La Scala, Berlin Philharmonie, Lincoln Center and Sydney Opera House. She will be the soloist in the opening work: Poulenc’s Gloria which is scored for soprano solo, large orchestra, and chorus.

To mark the centenary of Vaughan Williams’ birth the orchestra led by James Toll will perform his “Serenade to Music”. The celebratory concert will also include Parry “I was Glad”, Fauré “Cantique de Jean Racine” and works by Stanford.

WMC is grateful for the support of Finzi Friends.
