Important update to public services

COVID-19 update: Gathering for public worship, in the cathedral building

In line with the latest Government guidance, Winchester Cathedral will be holding two weekly public services inside the Cathedral, beginning from the 8th March:

  • Wednesdays, 12noon, starting 10th March – sung Eucharist (CW), Presbytery
  • Fridays, 12noon, starting 12th March – said Holy Communion (BCP), location TBC

The Wednesday service will be live streamed, as will additional Feast Day Eucharists at noon, whenever they occur, the next being the Feast of the Annunciation on the 25th of March.

Chapter, in consultation with the Bishop, is designing a roadmap which fits with the wider plans to move out of lockdown, with hopes to extend to holding Sunday worship in time for Passion Sunday (21st March) and the following days of Holy Week. Further details to follow.

The safety of the congregation, staff and volunteers is of the utmost importance, and the Dean and Chapter are confident that public worship can resume as part of a gradual, staged approach by adhering to current government guidelines and social distancing – as has been done in previous phases of the pandemic.

The Cathedral will remain open for private prayer and quiet reflection, between 1pm-5pm Monday to Saturday, and 12pm-3pm on Sundays.

Morning and Evening worship will continue to be live streamed on Facebook, YouTube and on the website, and all are welcome to join in Cathedral activities and online worship. In addition, there is the opportunity to meet with others in the Winchester Cathedral Zoom Room for Morning Prayer and after Evensong or Evening Prayer on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The North Transept accessibility lift is currently out of service. Due to concert staging, ramp access cannot be provided, so wheelchair access to the East End will not be available until the evening of Saturday 28 March. From then, access will be via ramp until repairs to the platform lift are complete. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
